Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here is a list of questions that we are often asked.  If you don’t see your question answered here, please contact us!

I signed up for a session but now I need to back out. What’s your return policy?

If you are signing up before the season has started, we’ll give you a full refund. If you need to leave mid-season, you’ll need to pay for the sessions that have already taken place and we’ll split the cost of the rest of the sessions.

What about ticks?

Ticks are a new reality for us in Southern Ontario.  They are officially everywhere including the city backyards and parks and they are active so long as the temperature is above freezing.  It is recommended that  your child wear light colored, long sleeves and pants that are tucked into boots or socks and running shoes. Keeping skin covered is recommended so that ticks have fewer access points to bite into skin. The light colored clothing makes it easier to spot ticks resting on top of clothing.  Most importantly, thoroughly check your child (and pets) for ticks after they have been outside.   Read more here.


What should my child wear or bring?

Please dress as you would if you were taking them on a hike and pack appropriate clothing for any possible weather variations that day! There is a high possibility that you or your child will get dirty, so a complete change of clothing for the car ride home is encouraged. You may also wish to bring bug spray, sun screen, lots of water to drink, a nut and peanut free snack, and if you have your own whistle, feel free to bring that too.  (If you do not have one, we will provide one.) In cold weather, we may need to be more diligent about clothing for children (long underwear, warm jacket, snow pants, hats, gloves, etc.) out of concern for health and safety.

How are we notified about cancellations?

If you are a member of our Learning in the Woods Facebook Page, we will post it there at least an hour before the session starts.  We also send out a mass email and make phone calls to anyone whom we have not heard back from.


Are there make-up sessions for cancelled classes?

Yes, we save 1-2 days at the end of each seasons to run make-up sessions for classes that we have had to cancel due to weather.  In the event that we have had to cancel more than 2 sessions, we will refund you the cost of the sessions cancelled.


What happens if it rains or there is bad weather?

We continue to enjoy the woods in the rain and snow.  If it is very windy or thunderstorms, we may need to cancel a session.  We try to make these decisions in advance but if a storm approaches unexpectedly, caregivers may be called to pick their child up early.

Do you ever have discounts?

We do!  Often new programs will be offered at discounted rates to entice families to give it a try.   For our regular programs, we would prefer all families to pay regular rates for their child so that we can cover all our costs related to facilitator wages, CPR training, and property maintenance, fees and taxes.  However, we recognize that different families are in different financial situations, so we are open to discussing lower rates to families who request it.  Ultimately, it is our goal to welcome all who are interested  to Learning in the Woods; money should not be a deterrent to those who wish to grow and learn with us.  We mean that.  We are happily committed to making this work for everyone.
